REGIONAL ALLIANCE FOR PRESERVATION (RAP) MEMBERS POISED TO OFFER HURRICANE KATRINA DISASTER RECOVERY INFORMATION FOR COLLECTIONS-HOLDING INSTITUTIONS

IN THE WAKE OF THE DEVASTATION CAUSED BY HURRICANE KATRINA, the members of the Regional Alliance for Preservation (RAP) are poised to offer technical assistance by phone to help in the recovery of important collections in museums, libraries, archives, historical societies and other cultural institutions. Once personal safety has been established and institutions are able to access their collections, assessment of damage can begin.
RAP IS A NATIONAL COLLABORATION OF FOURTEEN REGIONAL CONSERVATION CENTERS across the United States, each of which provides advice and technical assistance on preservation in its region and beyond.
THE RAP CENTERS OFFER A WIDE RANGE OF EXPERTISE in conservation and preservation for materials in different media including: paper, books, photographs, textiles, paintings, sculpture, furniture, ethnographic objects, and fine art media. Most Centers have professional conservators on staff who can advise on the technical aspects of hurricane disaster recovery.

RAP CENTER DISASTER ASSISTANCE:
Most of the Rap Centers offer free disaster advice by telephone and email, and will advise institutions and individuals on dealing with hurricane recovery and salvage.
