Why were things stored in basements in New Orleans? Is that disaster planning?
2006-01-03 10:01:39

Irene Wainwright
New Orleans Public Library's archivists, Wayne Everard and I, did somehow survive the City's layoffs, but 197 members of NOPL's staff (that's over 90%) did not. Regardless of rank, time-in-service, or any other measure of dedicated service, the great majority of our colleagues are now unemployed, and the public library system of New Orleans is on life support. Although the Main Library (and the City Archives and Special Collections) came through the storm almost miraculously intact, only four of our twelve branches can be reopened without major repair and replacement of the collections and entire contents. Of the eight that were damaged, five are almost completely destroyed. (We have posted photographs and brief damage assessments of our buildings on our website at http://nutrias.org; these photographs will say much more than I can about where we currently stand.) I don't know that outrage is the appropriate emotion right now. The entire City of New Orleans is on life support, and we are only one tragedy in a list that stretches the length of the region and cuts deep into every level of society. What is needed, rather, is public support for the rebuilding of New Orleans.

I hope archivists and librarians employed by the City of New Orleans and who need to manage the recovery efforts of archival/historical/library collections are not now unemployed as a result of the city's current, and likely, future layoffs. If you are one of those unemployed due to the layoffs, please keep the profession informed so we can express our outrage to those in power. Thank you.

I had a huge archive of photos, negatives, video, audiotapes, slides, and other documents pertaining to Bourbon Street in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, burlesque, the French Quarter, eccentric personalities, Ruthie the Duck Girl, and much more. All of it (except some videotapes) was in my Gentilly home near UNO. My neighborhood received 10 feet of water at the time the flood wall broke, and is currently at 4 feet of water. Had the flood walls not broken, my home would have been okay! I was thoroughly documenting a part of New Orleans culture that no one else was doing, and now it's gone. I am searching websites to get an idea of what to expect when I go look through what's left of my house. There will certainly be layers of toxic mud, but I don't believe I'll be able to get to the house before things start to dry out! I'm really hoping to save some of the hundreds of negatives that I have. If anyone can help, please contact me at rickdelaup@cox.net

Here is a link to a recent article about my situation:

http://www.qctimes.net/articles/2005/09/14/news/local/doc4327b4bc82221015875902.txt

I look forward to hearing from anyone who can help me as I desperately am hoping to salvage something. Anyone got a boat?

Hey, Mark Cave (of the THNOC), can you currently be reached by email?

From a letter-writing and/or contributions point-of-view, what can someone do who is not in your area?
I have used the services of many repositories in the New Orleans area for genealogy research.I would like to be able to pass on some info to my research buddies about who could be contacted in the gov't (or elsewhere) to express concern about historical records preservation.

Thanks!

Academy of Certified Archivists via Cindy Smolovik
Announcement: In addition to the emotional support extended by the SAA NAGARA joint statement, the Academy has taken steps to provide tangible relief and support to our members by extending emergency member benefits to the Certified Archivists from the Katrina impacted part of the Gulf coast. The Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of the Academy recognize the obstacles facing our members working within the disaster affected area and want to make retaining their C.A. status easier and simpler. 1) Membership dues will be waived for a period of one (1) year for any C.A. requesting this benefit that lived or worked in the effected areas of Louisiana and Mississippi. 2)A one time waiver of the one-time ACA membership fee for anyone who took and passed the exam in 2005, and inhabited the area of the Gulf coast devastated by Hurricane Katrina is authorized. Eligible ACA candidate must apply for the benefit to the Academy’s Headquarters in Albany, New York. 3) If Hurricane Katrina impacted C.A.s are due to recertify in 2006 or 2007, the Academy will extend the period of time allowed for accumulating recertification credits by 2 years.
4)If a Certified Archivist living in the affected area is scheduled to recertify in the year 2006 or 2007, and he or she requests an extension, they may submit the petition for recertification in 2008 and 2009, respectively. We appreciate that the ability to travel and participate in professional development activities may be hindered by lack of funds for some time after this disaster and an extension of time to collect credits is a reasonable and proper accommodation.
5)Lastly, the Academy of Certified Archivists will donate $1,000 USD to a verified relief fund created by regional or national archival organizations for the assistance of Katrina impacted archivists and archival materials or facilities. If a fund for this purpose is not founded for a period of 90 days, the money will be donated to the American Red Cross or another secular philanthropic organization rendering aid in the devastated areas. These funds are a combination of donations and funds held by the ACA. While these are limited and measured efforts, we hope that they give encouragement to our friends and colleagues who face such difficult times ahead. If you have questions about these benefits to ACA members, please contact Michael Holland, email: hollandm@missouri.edu ACA President or Cindy Smolovik, Vice President/President Elect. Email: cindy.smolovik@nara.gov.

Here in Austin, I can do some things to help out. I have no space to offer, but can do other things that might help. Do not be afraid to ask.

My staff and I will do whatever we can to make things easier to face the challenges in the months ahead. We feel the pain of this all for the archival community and the families (and pets) that are so affected by this event. It will be our pleasure to help in whatever way we can to support our colleagues on a personal level and to support the institutions that you are each one affiliated with at present.

Leon Miller (or any other Tulaners), any word yet from Rob Sherer or Bill Meneray? Glad to know you are in Houston.

Sara Stone, National Park Service
Friends and colleagues, I know that Gulf coast area archivists, librarians and curators (and techs) will want to stay close to their collections and get back in a.s.a.p., but if anyone contemplates coming to Washington, D.C., to seek employment and start a new life, or for emergency-related reasons, I can put up a single soul in my small spare room. Wish I could promise you a job, but will be glad to help you look for one. Can offer room and board (not a very good cook anymore) if you can stand to live with cats, for up to three months. My house is
close to public transportation so you could get buy without owning a car. Call me at the office at 301-341-0710, or wilstonma@yahoo.com Glad to see that everyone is calling/writing in and am hoping for the best for you all. ss

We are all overwhelmed with the sad news from New Orleans. Please let us know if there is any personal or professional help we can extend to you in that community. We currently have Tulane students here at SMU. I have a son at the Dallas Jesuit College Preparatory School where they are also taking displaced students as well as at the St. Rita lower school next door. Professionals from Louisiana in the area, please feel free to contact me if I can assist with your collections or help you personally or professionally in any way. Email me at apeterso@mail.smu.edu or call at the office 214-768-2661 or on my cell phone 214-679-8002. I lived in New Orleans for two years in the 1980s working at the Louisiana State Museum and hope there is something I can do to help those from that wonderful, historic city.

Has anyone heard from Marie Windell? She was living in an assisted living place near Bayou St. John. Also, has anyone heard from Florence Jumonville? She has two aging parents that are of need of lots of care.

Vicki Walsh emailed today letting us all know that the State Archivists are concerned.

From Vicki:

I've been following the
postings on the SSA weblog and am so grateful to you all for hosting it.

Please let me know if you learn of anything that the state archivists can do to help.

Deepest thanks to Brenda & Stan Gunn for setting up this site. Emma & I send our thoughts & prayers to all our New Orleans colleagues. Any news about Rob Sherer (Tulane Archives) and his wife would be most welcome.

I am impressed from the solidarity in your community. I cannot speak for European archivists but I am sure that most of them have the same warm thoughts for the Katrina affected like me.

Best wishes and greetings from Germany

Nevermind, I just noticed on the check-in section that Stasia is indeed back in Sacramento and okay!
2005-09-04 14:34:53

Mary Taylor
I didn't know that she had moved there (I would imagine it was for her husband to do a medical residency). I was supposed to go to SAA this year and had hoped to catch up with her there, but my funding got denied.

I'll try asking around our old coworkers in Sacramento to see if anybody's heard anything about her. Hopefully she's okay but has only been able to get in touch with her family so far. If I hear anything, I'll let ya'll know.

Stasia had just moved to New Orleans a couple of months ago.

Has anyone heard anything from Carol Mathias???
2005-09-03 11:47:14

Elizabeth Dow
Amy Baptiste, from THNOC, has reached Cape Cod. No word on Alfred. If he did not evacuate, he's probably OK but surrounded by water; he lives in the Garden District, which is relatively high.

I also heard, through another list, that most of the collection at Amistad was moved to an upper floor before the staff evacuated.
2005-09-03 05:53:26

David B. Gracy II
Does anyone have news of Alfred Lemmon and others at the Historic New Orleans Collection? I have seen information (happily good news) only on Mark Cave.

What about Stasia?? I haven't seen her in awhile and last I'd heard she was in Pasadena. Did she stay over for a week in New Orleans??

Has anyone heard of the whereabouts of Bruce Boyd Raeburn or Art Carpenter?
2005-09-02 14:36:13

Like Shelly, I think that Cindy's comments express my thoughts and concerns perfectly. All of you are in our thoughts and prayers. If any SSA member from Louisiana is in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and needs a computer, phone line, desk space (or anything else I might be able to provide), please don't hesitate to call me at 214.670.1444
2005-09-02 12:47:48

Shelly Kelly
Can I just ditto everything that Cindy said? She said it so beautifully. Even though we only see each other once or twice a year, so many of you are like an extended family. And like a family I've been so concerned for you during this terrible tragedy. I hope everyone checks in soon. I stand ready to help in any way necessary.
2005-09-02 10:44:30

Cindy Smolovik
My friends in Louisiana, you are so much in my thoughts right now, and I am praying that you are safe wherever you are. So much of the time when we see each other we are so filled with immediate business at hand that we forget to tell each other how much we appreciate each other and how knowing each other enriches us. So I want to take the time right now to let you know - that each of you are very special to me, and whatever I have accomplished it has been with your help, your encouragement, and your friendships.

I will keep holding positive thoughts of all of you. Please let me know, when you can, through this website or through email how you are, where you are, and what you need.

With love and prayers.

Cindy Smolovik
